I spent a great deal of time this weekend working on updates to my WordPress theme. One of the more noticeable changes is the addition of support for threaded comments. The function has been available in WordPress since version 2.7, but I didn't get around to modifying my theme until now. Hopefully, this will make the comments section a little more useful.
I had a great deal of difficulty getting the styling of the comments to look OK. My skills with CSS are limited at best. I really need to spend more time reading some of the books I have instead of surfing the web. I'm reminded of a couple of famous quotes from great scientists of the past.
"Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration."
- Thomas Alva Edison, Harper's Monthly (September 1932)
"His method was inefficient in the extreme, for an immense ground had to be covered to get anything at all unless blind chance intervened and, at first, I was almost a sorry witness of his doings, knowing that just a little theory and calculation would have saved him 90 percent of the labor. But he had a veritable contempt for book learning and mathematical knowledge, trusting himself entirely to his inventor's instinct and practical American sense." - Nikola Tesla, New York Times (On the occasion of Edison's death)
My efforts this weekend represented the Edison method much more than the Tesla method. I really need to learn this stuff better so I don't waste so much time getting things to work.
Anyway, as I indicated earlier, my CSS skills are severely lacking. I tested the updated theme extensively off-line, but I haven't checked every blog post. If you see something that looks out of whack, please let me know in the comments.
